Overview
Applies to:
Cognni customers who want Cognni's Automated Microsoft Labeling rules to override Microsoft Purview Sensitivity Labels on specific files.
What will be Affected:
Certain files that Cognni scans and classifies will have an existing Sensitivity Label in place. This is most likely the case when default labeling is in use. Cognni allows you to configure rules that define the logic for when Cognni will override a file's existing Sensitivity Label with a new Sensitivity Label.
Solution Summary:
To configure override rules, (1) define a Cognni labeling rule connecting a Cognni Category to a Microsoft Purview Sensitivity Label, and (2) define which existing Microsoft Purview Sensitivity Labels Cognni should override with the newly defined rule.
Prerequisites:
Cognni:
Subscription for Cognni Microsoft Labeling Automation
Other:
Active AIP P20 License for all relevant Office 365 Accounts, or above.
Global Administrator for M365 Tenant

Solution Steps:
Step 1: Navigate to Automate Microsoft Labeling
Step 2: Identify an existing Automated Labeling Rule
Navigate to Configure:
Step 3: Select "Override"
Step 4: Configure Your Override Logic
By default, Cognni does not override any existing Microsoft Purview Sensitivity Labels, only by selecting the check mark beside a Sensitivity Label in the Override list will Cognni replace an existing Sensitivity Label with the defined rule.
Ex. Rule defined "Employment Termination > Internal Confidential HR Information"
By default, Cognni will place the Microsoft Purview Sensitivity Label "Internal Confidential HR Information" on files Cognni identifies as "Employment Termination" that do not have a pre-existing Sensitivity Label from your tenant.
With an Override rule in place, Cognni will apply the "Internal Confidential HR Information" Sensitivity Label to "Employment Termination" files with pre-existing Sensitivity Labels that have a checkmark in the Override property.
